While technological optimists point to historical precedents of technology creating more work than it destroys, many workers and analysts are right to identify serious near-term disruption as a genuine cause for concern. On balance, I believe the outcome is not predetermined and depends critically on policy choices made in the coming decade. Those who welcome automation's expansion argue that it consistently creates new categories of work alongside the roles it eliminates. The Industrial Revolution displaced agricultural and craft labour, yet ultimately gave rise to entirely new industries and higher average living standards. Contemporary AI creates demand for data scientists, prompt engineers, AI safety specialists, and automation maintenance professionals — roles that did not exist a decade ago. Repetitive, dangerous, or physically demanding jobs replaced by machines also free human workers to pursue more creative and fulfilling roles. However, this optimistic view glosses over the pace and scale of current automation. Previous technological transitions unfolded over generations, allowing labour markets to adapt. Generative AI and robotics are advancing rapidly enough to affect multiple industries simultaneously within years. Workers in data entry, logistics, customer service, and even radiology face genuine displacement risk. For middle-aged workers without the educational background or financial resources to retrain, this represents a profound economic vulnerability. The difference between a beneficial transition and a damaging one depends on social investment: robust retraining programmes, portable benefits systems, and education systems that emphasise adaptability over rote learning can smooth the shift considerably.
