IELTS Writing Task 2: Tourism Essays

International tourism generates substantial economic value for host nations while simultaneously imposing environmental, cultural, and infrastructural costs. Managing these trade-offs effectively has become one of the central challenges for destinations seeking sustainable development. The primary benefits of tourism are economic. For small island nations and developing countries especially, tourist spending represents a critical source of foreign currency and employment. In countries such as Thailand, Croatia, and Kenya, the hospitality and travel sector employs millions and contributes double-digit percentages of GDP. Beyond direct income, tourism supports peripheral industries from local food production to traditional crafts, preserving cultural practices that might otherwise become economically unviable. The costs, however, are substantial. Mass tourism at iconic destinations — Venice, Santorini, Machu Picchu — causes environmental degradation, carbon emissions from increased air travel, inflation of local housing prices, and the displacement of resident communities. Cultural authenticity also suffers when local traditions are commercialised for tourist consumption, gradually replacing genuine heritage with a performance of it. Coral reef damage near diving hotspots and footpath erosion on popular hiking trails represent the physical expression of these pressures. Mitigation strategies are varied and increasingly adopted. Destination management organisations in several European cities now limit tourist accommodation through Airbnb regulations and impose visitor caps at environmentally sensitive sites. Taxes on tourist activities can fund conservation and distribute benefits to local communities. Governments can also incentivise off-season travel and develop lesser-known regions to reduce spatial concentration. In conclusion, while tourism's economic contributions are significant, its negative effects are manageable with targeted regulatory and investment approaches rather than restrictions on tourism itself.
