IELTS Writing Task 1: How to Describe a Process Diagram
IELTS Writing Task 1 process diagram guide with band 7–9 model answer. How to describe manufacturing and natural processes in passive voice.
Overview
Process diagrams depict how something is manufactured, grown, or how a natural cycle operates. Unlike charts and graphs, they do not involve data comparison — instead, they require clear sequential description using passive voice, sequencing language, and precise technical vocabulary. Accuracy in following the steps is essential.
Sample Question
The diagram below shows the process by which olive oil is produced. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features. Write at least 150 words. [Process: 1. Harvesting (olives picked by hand or machine) → 2. Transportation to mill → 3. Washing and cleaning → 4. Crushing (stone mill or steel disc) → 5. Malaxation (mixing the paste) → 6. Centrifugation (oil separated from water and solids) → 7. Filtration → 8. Storage in stainless steel tanks → 9. Bottling and labelling → 10. Distribution]
Band 7–9 Sample Answer
Band 8 LevelThe diagram illustrates the ten-stage process by which olive oil is produced, from the initial harvest through to commercial distribution. The process begins in the olive grove, where olives are harvested either by hand or using mechanical equipment, depending on the scale of production. The harvested olives are then transported to a processing mill, where they are washed and cleaned to remove leaves, dirt, and debris. Once clean, the olives are crushed using either traditional stone mills or modern steel disc crushers, which break down the fruit into a coarse paste. This paste is then subjected to malaxation — a slow mixing process that encourages the oil droplets to coalesce into larger amounts, making subsequent extraction more efficient. The paste is subsequently processed in a centrifuge, which separates the olive oil from water and solid residue. The extracted oil then undergoes filtration to remove any remaining impurities before being transferred into stainless steel storage tanks, where it is held until needed. In the final stages, the oil is bottled and labelled according to grade and variety, before being distributed to retailers and consumers. In summary, olive oil production is a linear process moving from agricultural harvesting through mechanical processing to commercial packaging. (Word count: 195)
Expert Tips for This Topic
Use passive voice throughout: "olives are harvested", "the paste is crushed", "the oil is filtered".
Use sequencing language: "the process begins with", "subsequently", "in the next stage", "finally".
Do not give opinions or add information not shown in the diagram.
An overview for a process diagram should describe what is shown overall and how many stages there are.
Check that every step in the diagram appears in your answer — missing stages cost marks.
