IELTS Writing Task 2: Sports Essays

National investment in elite sport and major sporting events is a significant policy commitment in many countries, justified by its advocates on grounds of national prestige, economic return, and inspirational effect. However, critics make a compelling case that the same resources could generate far greater public health benefits if directed towards grassroots participation. I believe both goals are valid but that participatory sport deserves substantially greater emphasis. Governments that prioritise elite funding argue that Olympic medals and World Cup hosting generate returns beyond the gold: the infrastructure built for events such as the 2012 London Olympics provided lasting improvements to urban areas, while the "sport inspiration" effect — measurable increases in youth participation following a nation's athletic success — suggests elite success and grassroots growth are not entirely separate. National identity and soft power are also meaningful, if difficult to quantify, returns on investment. Nevertheless, the evidence that major events produce lasting participation increases is mixed. Many Olympic host cities report underused facilities years after the games, while the majority of public health data indicates that elite success does not reliably translate into gym memberships or youth club enrolment among the broader population. By contrast, investment in accessible community facilities, school physical education, and subsidised recreational programmes produces consistent, measurable improvements in cardiovascular health and wellbeing. Given that public health costs associated with physical inactivity run into hundreds of billions annually in developed nations, the economic case for participatory investment is compelling. In conclusion, elite funding serves cultural and diplomatic purposes, but governments should allocate the greater share of sports budgets to programmes that improve the health of the general population.
