The weakening of community bonds and growing emphasis on self-interest over collective engagement is observable across many developed and developing societies. This shift stems from multiple interrelated causes and carries significant social consequences. Several factors have accelerated the move towards individualism. Rising urbanisation places more people in environments where anonymity is the norm — unlike rural or small-town settings where neighbours interact regularly, dense cities often mean residents do not know the people on their own floor. Technology compounds this isolation paradoxically: while social media creates the impression of connection, research consistently links heavy platform use with reduced participation in face-to-face community activities such as volunteering, local governance, and neighbourhood associations. Economic pressures also play a role. Longer working hours, multiple jobs, and longer commutes leave less time and energy for civic participation. When survival competes with community engagement, survival wins. The consequences of this individualism are wide-ranging. Socially isolated individuals — particularly the elderly — face significantly elevated health risks: studies have linked chronic loneliness to outcomes comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes per day. At the community level, declining civic participation weakens the institutions — local charities, neighbourhood watch groups, religious organisations — that provide a social safety net during crises, as the pandemic vividly demonstrated for many isolated urban households. Addressing this trend requires deliberate design: urban planners who build shared spaces, employers who respect work-life boundaries, and technology platforms designed to facilitate real-world connection rather than replace it.
