IELTS Writing Task 2: Opinion Essays (Agree/Disagree)

Master IELTS Writing Task 2 opinion essays. How to structure "to what extent do you agree" questions with band 7–9 model answers.

Overview

Opinion essays — often phrased as "To what extent do you agree or disagree?" — require you to take a clear position and defend it with well-developed arguments. The most common mistake is presenting both sides equally without committing to a view. Examiners expect a clear, sustained position throughout the essay.

Band 7–9 Sample Answer

Band 8 Level

Competitive sport is a significant feature of childhood development in many educational systems, and I largely agree that it fosters skills of lasting value — though the benefits depend on how competition is structured and coached. The most convincing argument in favour of competitive sport is the authentic context it provides for learning teamwork. Unlike classroom group projects, team sports demand genuine interdependence: a tennis doubles pair or a football team cannot succeed without real-time coordination, role acceptance, and trust in partners. These are not abstracted lessons but lived experiences with immediate, visible consequences. Research in educational psychology suggests that skills developed through embodied, consequential experience transfer more reliably into adult professional life than those learned didactically. Resilience is similarly developed through athletic competition in ways that are difficult to replicate elsewhere. Losing — genuinely, in front of peers — and returning to practise again is among the most formative experiences available to young people. Athletes who progress through competitive levels almost universally report that managing setback and maintaining effort under pressure were the most durable lessons of their sporting careers. The important caveat is that these benefits depend heavily on coaching culture. When winning is the exclusive priority, anxiety, dropout, and even dishonest behaviour can result. Programmes that emphasise effort, improvement, and sportsmanship over results consistently produce better developmental outcomes than those focused solely on victory. In conclusion, I strongly agree that competitive sport develops teamwork and resilience in children, provided that adult supervisors frame competition as a process of growth rather than a measure of absolute worth. Expert Tips for This Topic

State your position clearly in the introduction — do not keep the examiner guessing.

"Largely agree" or "strongly agree" are both valid positions — avoid wishy-washy "it depends" introductions.

Each body paragraph should make one argument with a clear explanation and a supporting example.

The final paragraph should reinforce your position, not introduce new points.

Vocabulary: "interdependence", "resilience", "sportsmanship", "developmental outcomes".
