IELTS Writing Task 2: Media Essays

Social media has fundamentally altered the landscape of public information, enabling content to reach billions of people within minutes regardless of its accuracy. I strongly agree that the scale and speed of misinformation on these platforms present a qualitatively greater threat than traditional media posed. The core distinction lies in the architecture of distribution. Traditional print and broadcast outlets operated within editorial structures that, however imperfect, applied journalistic standards before publication. Social media platforms, by contrast, algorithmically amplify content based on engagement rather than accuracy. Research conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic found that false health information spread six times faster than factual corrections on major platforms, with direct consequences for vaccine uptake rates and public health outcomes. Furthermore, the democratisation of content creation — while broadly positive — has eliminated barriers that once filtered demonstrably false material. Anyone can publish globally, and sophisticated deepfakes now make fabricated audio and video nearly indistinguishable from genuine recordings. Traditional tabloids, despite their sensationalism, were ultimately constrained by defamation law and physical distribution costs; social media carries no such friction. The algorithmic reinforcement of echo chambers compounds the problem. Users are increasingly exposed only to viewpoints that confirm existing beliefs, making communities more susceptible to coordinated disinformation campaigns, as seen in multiple democratic elections since 2016. While traditional media was imperfect, its institutional accountability mechanisms provided meaningful checks. Restoring comparable standards online — through platform regulation, algorithmic transparency, and digital literacy education — has become a pressing democratic necessity. (Word count: 255)
