IELTS Writing Task 2: Family Essays

The proliferation of dual-income households has become a defining feature of contemporary family life across much of the world. While there are meaningful benefits to this arrangement, the potential developmental impact on children warrants careful consideration. I believe the outcomes depend primarily on the quality of childcare available and the degree of parental presence during non-working hours. Proponents of both parents working argue that the financial and personal benefits are substantial. Dual incomes typically secure better housing, education, and healthcare for children — material conditions with documented positive effects on long-term outcomes. Crucially, research consistently shows that parents — particularly mothers — who maintain career engagement report higher levels of personal fulfilment and lower rates of depression, and that their mental wellbeing directly benefits family dynamics. Children raised by professionally engaged parents also often develop stronger work ethics and greater independence. Critics, however, point to evidence suggesting that reduced parental contact in early childhood can negatively affect attachment and emotional development. Children who spend extended hours in institutional childcare before age three may receive less responsive, individualised attention than a dedicated parent at home would provide. The fatigue and stress associated with balancing demanding careers with parenting responsibilities can also limit the quality of interactions during family time. The key variable, in my view, is not whether both parents work but the availability of high-quality, affordable childcare and employment policies that genuinely enable parents to be present when it matters — at school events, during illness, and at the end of the day.
