IELTS Writing Task 2: Environment Essays

It is widely argued that excessive consumption patterns are the primary driver of today's environmental crisis. While I broadly agree with this view, I believe that industrial practices and weak policy frameworks also play a significant role. The most compelling argument in favour of overconsumption as the chief cause is the sheer volume of waste it generates. In developed nations, consumers discard enormous quantities of food, electronics, and clothing each year. Fast fashion alone accounts for roughly 10% of global carbon emissions, while food waste produces methane in landfills — a greenhouse gas far more potent than CO₂. These patterns directly deplete finite resources and fill ecosystems with non-biodegradable material. However, attributing environmental damage solely to individual consumption oversimplifies a systemic issue. Large corporations and heavy industries release disproportionate amounts of pollutants relative to any individual's footprint. A single coal-fired power station emits more CO₂ annually than thousands of households combined. Furthermore, governments in rapidly industrialising economies often prioritise growth over environmental regulation, permitting practices that would be illegal in more tightly governed states. That said, consumer demand ultimately drives both industry and policy. When populations consistently choose environmentally damaging products — cheap plastics, high-emission vehicles, or intensively farmed meat — they signal to markets that profitability outweighs sustainability. Changing this calculus requires simultaneous shifts in consumer habits and stronger legislative frameworks. In conclusion, while overconsumption is undeniably a major cause of environmental degradation, it cannot be separated from industrial behaviour and governance failures.
