A philosophy graduate who has analysed Kantian ethics may not enter a defined career pipeline, yet their capacity for structured argument benefits any professional context they enter. Reducing degree programmes to vocational toolkits, critics contend, narrows human capital and ultimately weakens innovation. Conversely, the practical argument is difficult to dismiss. Graduates face significant debt and competitive labour markets; an education that fails to address employability leaves many financially vulnerable. Professional programmes in engineering, law, and medicine demonstrate that rigorous academic content and career preparation are not mutually exclusive. Graduates of these disciplines consistently rank among the most analytically capable professionals precisely because their training fuses theory with practice. In my view, the dichotomy is largely false.
