IELTS Speaking Part 2: Describe a Hobby or Activity You Enjoy

I'd like to talk about landscape photography, which I took up about five years ago and which has become one of the most consistently rewarding things I do. I started almost by accident. A friend invited me on a hiking trip and I borrowed an old camera just to document the walk. I took about two hundred photographs that weekend, mostly mediocre, but a few that surprised me — moments of light I hadn't consciously noticed until I saw them on a screen later. That gap between what I had actually experienced and what I had inadvertently captured intrigued me enough to buy a second-hand camera and start learning properly. Now I go out to shoot roughly once a fortnight, usually early morning when the light is most interesting and the locations are quietest. I've developed a preference for coastal scenes and industrial landscapes — places where natural and human elements intersect in complicated ways. There's a particular satisfaction in returning to the same location across different seasons and weather conditions and finding it entirely transformed. What I find most rewarding is the way it has made me genuinely attentive to things I would have walked past. I notice light differently now — the angle of an afternoon shadow, the way fog sits in a valley. Photography taught me to slow down and look properly, which is a habit I've found valuable outside the hobby too. It also connects me to places in a way that simply visiting them doesn't. You remember more vividly what you have paid close attention to.
