IELTS Band Scores Explained
How overall band scores are calculated, what the band descriptors mean, and how to interpret your practice estimates.
How overall band scores are calculated and rounded
The IELTS overall band score is the average of the four individual skill scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking). This average is then rounded to the nearest whole or half band.
Specifically, the rounding rules applied to the raw average are:
- →Raw average ending in .00 → rounds to the whole band (e.g. 6.00 → 6.0)
- →Raw average ending in .125 → rounds up to the next .5 (e.g. 6.125 → 6.5)
- →Raw average ending in .25 → rounds up to the next .5 (e.g. 6.25 → 6.5)
- →Raw average ending in .375 → rounds up to the next .5 (e.g. 6.375 → 6.5)
- →Raw average ending in .5 → stays at .5 (e.g. 6.50 → 6.5)
- →Raw average ending in .625 → rounds up to the next whole band (e.g. 6.625 → 7.0)
- →Raw average ending in .75 → rounds up to the next whole band (e.g. 6.75 → 7.0)
- →Raw average ending in .875 → rounds up to the next whole band (e.g. 6.875 → 7.0)
This rounding method means that, for example, individual scores of 6.0, 6.5, 6.0, 6.0 produce an overall band of 6.0 — not 6.1 or 6.2. Individual skill scores themselves are reported in whole and half bands only.
