IELTS Listening: Sentence Completion

IELTS Listening sentence completion practice with grammar rules, strategies, and sample exercises.

Overview

Sentence completion tasks require you to fill one, two, or three words into incomplete sentences. These appear most frequently in Sections 3 and 4. Unlike note completion, sentences must be grammatically complete — your answer must fit naturally into the sentence structure.

Sample Questions & Answers

Complete the sentences. Write NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS for each answer.

1

The study found that sleep deprivation has a significant effect on _____ performance.

Answer:cognitive
2

Participants were asked to complete tasks after varying periods of _____.

Answer:restricted sleep
3

The most significant decline was observed in _____ decision-making.

Answer:complex
4

Researchers recommend a minimum of _____ hours of sleep per night for adults.

Answer:seven
5

Future research should investigate the long-term effects of _____ sleep patterns.

Answer:irregular

Expert Tips

Your answer must be grammatically correct — if the sentence says "a _____ effect", your answer should be an adjective.

Never write more words than the instruction allows — "seven to eight" would be wrong if the limit is one word.

The answer is usually a word directly from the audio — do not paraphrase.

Read the incomplete sentences before the audio to predict what part of speech (noun, adjective, etc.) you need.

Numbers can be written as digits (7) or words (seven) — both are acceptable.
