IELTS Listening Section 1: Form Completion

Master IELTS Listening Section 1 form completion questions. Practice exercises, common errors, and expert tips.

Overview

Section 1 of IELTS Listening features a conversation between two people in a social or transactional context — making a booking, registering for a course, enquiring about services. Form completion tasks ask you to fill in missing information, most often names, numbers, dates, addresses, and short descriptions. The audio is relatively slow and clear in this section, but accuracy is critical.

Receptionist: Good morning, City Dental Practice. How can I help? Caller: Hi, yes, I'd like to make an appointment for a check-up. Receptionist: Certainly. Can I take your name? Caller: It's Thomas — T-H-O-M-A-S — Whitfield — W-H-I-T-F-I-E-L-D. Receptionist: Thank you. And is this your first visit to us? Caller: Yes, it is. Receptionist: Great. And what day would suit you best? Caller: I'd prefer a Thursday if possible, in the afternoon. Receptionist: We have Thursday the 18th at 3pm — does that work? Caller: Perfect. Receptionist: Can I take a contact number? Caller: 07412 — that's 07412 — 886 543. Receptionist: Thank you. And do you have dental insurance? Caller: Yes, through AXA Health. Receptionist: Wonderful. We'll see you on the 18th at 3pm.

Expert Tips

Proper nouns (names) are often spelled out letter by letter — be ready to write quickly.

Phone numbers are usually given in groups — write them as you hear each group.

Listen for corrections: "Actually, it's Tuesday, not Thursday" — always write the final answer given.

Do not write more words than the instruction allows — "AXA Health Insurance Company" would be wrong if the limit is two words.

Dates can be written as "18th" or "18 October" — either is acceptable unless the format is specified.
