IELTS Listening: Note Completion
IELTS Listening note completion practice with strategies, sample exercises, and common pitfalls to avoid.
Overview
Note completion tasks present a set of notes with gaps, and you must fill them with information from the audio. Notes use abbreviated, informal language (bullet points, abbreviations, symbols) and usually appear in Sections 2, 3, or 4. The structure of the notes helps you predict when each answer will appear.
Sample Questions & Answers
Complete the lecture notes. Write ONE WORD ONLY for each answer.
Topic: economic causes of _____.
Key factor: lack of _____ opportunities in rural areas.
Push factors also include: environmental _____.
Pull factors: higher _____ and better services in cities.
Effect on origin regions: _____ of skilled workers.
Recommended policy: invest in _____ infrastructure.
Expert Tips
Use the notes structure to predict the topic of each gap before the audio begins.
One-word answers in note completion are usually nouns — occasionally adjectives.
Notes follow the audio order — if you lose your place, find the next gap that matches something you hear.
Avoid articles (a/the) in your answers unless the instruction says otherwise.
Synonyms are common: "lack of work opportunities" in the audio may appear as "lack of employment" in the notes.
