IELTS Listening: Multiple Choice Questions
Practise IELTS Listening multiple choice questions with strategies to eliminate distractors and choose correct answers.
Overview
Multiple choice is one of the most common IELTS Listening question types and one of the most frequently mishandled. The key challenge is that all options may initially seem plausible, and the audio often mentions each option to create "distractors" — information that seems relevant but is not the correct answer. You must track whether a statement is affirmed, negated, or qualified.
Sample Questions & Answers
Choose the correct letter A, B, or C.
The speaker says that the new campus library is particularly valued for its: A. extended opening hours B. digital catalogue system C. quiet study spaces
According to the tutor, the biggest challenge with group projects is: A. dividing tasks fairly B. coordinating meeting times C. maintaining consistent standards
The speaker recommends students prepare for fieldwork by: A. reading background literature B. practising data recording techniques C. visiting the site in advance
Expert Tips
Read all three options before the audio starts — know what you are listening for.
All three options may be mentioned, but only one is the correct answer — do not choose the first one you hear.
Listen for qualifying language: "although...", "despite...", "the most important was..." — these modify the answer.
Distractors are usually mentioned but then corrected, qualified, or dismissed: "while X is helpful, Y is essential".
If you cannot decide between two options, make your best guess and move on — do not waste time.
