IELTS Listening: Matching Questions
IELTS Listening matching question practice with techniques for accurate attribution and avoiding common traps.
Overview
Matching tasks require you to connect items from one list to options from another — for example, matching speakers to opinions, items to features, or actions to outcomes. These appear most commonly in Sections 2 and 3. The challenge is tracking multiple potential matches simultaneously and avoiding false attribution.

Expert Tips
Read all options (A–G) before the audio — not just the items you need to match.
Options will usually be mentioned in the audio, but only one is the correct match for each item.
The audio may discuss options that are not the answer — this is deliberate misdirection.
If an option is mentioned with a negative or a qualification ("avoid" or "only if"), it is likely not the answer for that item.
You will not use all the options — some are distractors and will not be matched to anything.
