IELTS Listening: Map and Diagram Labelling
IELTS Listening map and diagram labelling practice with strategies for navigating spatial descriptions in audio.
Overview
Map and diagram labelling tasks require you to match spoken descriptions to specific locations on a plan or diagram. These typically appear in Section 2 with venue or facility descriptions. The challenge is tracking spatial language while simultaneously listening to new information.
Sample Questions & Answers
Label the map of the community centre. Choose FIVE answers from the box.
As you enter through the main entrance, the reception desk is directly _____ of you.
The sports hall is located _____ the reception, in the east wing.
The café is _____ from the entrance, opposite the notice board.
The meeting rooms are _____ the café, on the same side of the corridor.
The changing rooms are _____ the sports hall.
Expert Tips
Before the audio, study the map carefully — note what is already labelled and what needs to be filled.
Spatial vocabulary: "opposite", "adjacent to", "to the left/right of", "next to", "between", "facing".
Speakers usually start from a known point (entrance/reception) — track movement from there.
If a speaker says "turn left at the end of the corridor", they are physically moving you through the space.
Write the location name, not descriptive phrases — answers are usually single words or short labels.
